DIY Soap Making 101

mizzpam2

I've been searching for soap infused with eucalyptus, mint, and tea tree oils for a long time! It not only smells absolutely amazing in the shower, but this incredible blend is a fantastic mosquito repellent when I'm out in the yard. Plus, the tea tree oil works miracles, helping those small scrapes and scratches from gardening and yard work heal in no time! With DIY soap making, I can mix and match the esential oils important to me.

Ingredients:

Several brown and black bars of soap on a plate, engraved with "Hand Made" with a green and yellow massage soap bar nearby. The background includes jars and containers.

Detoxing "Hand Made" Bars:

1 - 4"x2" sq. Coconut Soap Base*

   1 - 4"x2" sq. Shea Butter Base*

1 tsp Clay

1/2 tsp Activated Charcoal (black bar)

 Eucalyptus Leaves (brown bars)

Tools needed:

2-3 small metal bowls, 1 large pot (not deep),

plastic spoons and knives, 1 small spatula, 1

plastic bowl, stove-top, and silicone mold(s)

*I choose to use soap bases because I prefer not to handle lye right now. The pre-made bases allow me to concentrate on the oils and scents that matter to me initially.

Directions:

In the large pot, heat water to a depth of approximately 2-3 inches. While the water is warming up, float the small metal bowls with soap-base mixtures in them. Ensure the water remains hot but not boiling, just enough to melt the soap-base mixtures in the bowls.

Combine your oils in a small plastic bowl. If you're incorporating flowers into your soap, sprinkle a thin layer at the bottom of your mold. (Avoid pressing the flowers down; you want them to blend into the soap as you pour the mixture into the mold)

Plan your layers or soap composition. After your base has melted in the small metal bowl(s), take them out of the water one at a time and incorporate your additives (such as oils, charcoal, or clay). Pour this mixture into your mold(s) and move quickly to any other base mixture you are going to make. Creating layers is not necessary; for my flower soap bars, I simply filled the mold to the top with the mixture, and that was all.

The soap solidifies rapidly, so act swiftly! Allow the molds to sit for about an hour. (The instructions suggested overnight, but I was too eager to try them out... lol) Larger molds will probably take longer.

** I have heard that palm oil is not considered eco-friendly due to its extraction process; therefore, I might opt for a different oil once I finish what I currently possess.
